5th Grade Girls Book Group

This is my first book group here at the Bedford Free Library and I am very excited about it. The book we will be discussing is River Boy by Tim Bowler.

We will meet at the library on Thursday, February 14th at 7:00 p.m.

Books are being held at the children's circulation desk for you to pick up.

Come in or call (234-3570) to sign up now!

What a great response! Eight girls have signed up.

I keep thinking about others reading this book, wondering what they think, what they like and don't like about the story.

It was not so easy choosing a book for a group of people I did not know at all.

Next time it will be fun to choose a book together. Also to plan together the way the group will function going forward.

Maybe we don't want to all read one book and discuss that book. Maybe we will decide that each of us will bring a book she has read and talk about it.

Anyway, I can't wait til the 14th!

The next book has been chosen!
We will read Gordon Korman's "No More Dead Dogs". I like it than none of us has read it. It will be fun to see if the author is as dynamic in print as he clearly was yesterday when he visited the school.

The date for the next meeting will be announced soon and copies of the book should start becoming available for pick up next week.

Thanks so much to all the girls who came to the meeting last evening (and to all the parents who made that possible). I had a great time.

There are few things I enjoy more than talking about books with people who love to read books. I left the meeting with my head full of all the things we discused. We covered a lot of ground in a short time. Many good observations were made...and many books other than Riverboy came up in conversation. My 'good books to read' list got at least ten titles added to it one hour's time.

How lucky I am to have this job! Now I just need a magic spell that grants unlimited reading time.....

Last week's meeting was full of laughter and good discussion.

'No More Dead Dogs' was a big hit with all of us. Its being set in Bedford Middle School was a particularly pleasant plus. One of the girls in the group wrote the following review:

"No More Dead Dogs is a great book! I like it because it was just like a middle school. Throughout the whole book you were wondering who did all of the pranks. I thought it could have been anybody. I loved the ending, the way Wallace Wallace fixed up teh play the way he wanted. No More Dead Dogs is a great book."

Our next book will be 'The Island of the Blue Dolphins' by Scott O'Dell. We will meet on April 17th, at 7 pm.

I can't wait!
